The Rich get Richer and the Fit get Richer Phenomena in Temporal Complex Networks in the Strategic Management Scientific Community

چکیده
The aim of this paper is to determine the general preferential attachment function and author fitness in the temporal complex co-authorship and citation networks of the strategic management scientific community. These are often described as the rich get richer and the fit get richer phenomena. This has been done by means of the PAFit method using the community's flagship journal, namely Strategic Management Journal. The results suggest the co-authorship and citation temporal networks are governed by both the fit get richer and the rich get richer processes. The attachment exponent of the preferential attachment function of the co-authorship network in the time span 2010-2017 is 1.12, which means that the co-authorship network of that time span is described by 'the winner takes all' phenomenon: all new entrants to the co-authorship network will enter through the highest connected authors. On the other hand, the average of the attachment exponents in the citation network is 0.3, which suggests the rich get richer phenomenon in the citation network is weaker than in the co-authorship network. This implies that the intrinsic scientific quality of each author is more important in getting new citations than co-authorship. Furthermore, author fitness in both co-authorship and citation networks are found to be consistent with the history of the strategic management scientific community.

Continuum rich-get-richer processes: Mean field analysis with an application to firm size
Classical rich-get-richer models have found much success in being able to broadly reproduce the statistics and dynamics of diverse real complex systems. These rich-get-richer models are based on classical urn models and unfold step-by-step in discrete time. Here, we consider a natural variation acting on a temporal continuum in the form of a partial differential equation (PDE). We first show th...
متن کاملStudying The Role of Social Capital in Cohesion of urban areas and its impact on reducing social Harm (Case study: Pardis New Town)
Today, with the development of urbanization and increased abnormal behaviors, particularly urban crimes, prevention of social harms is of great importance. Social Sciences and Urban Development can prevent crime in urban areas by understanding cultural and social traits alongside other actions, in a way that the wrongdoer finds less opportunity for acting a criminal behavior in urban areas. The...
متن کاملNetwork growth with preferential attachment and without "rich get richer" mechanism
We propose a simple preferential attachment model of growing network using the complementary probability of Barabási-Albert (BA) model, i.e., Π(ki) ∝ 1− ki ∑ j kj . In this network, new nodes are preferentially attached to not well connected nodes. Numerical simulations, in perfect agreement with the master equation solution, give an exponential degree distribution. This suggests that the power...
متن کاملA review of agent-based modeling (ABM) concepts and some of its main applications in management science
We live in a very complex world where we face complex phenomena such as social norms and new technologies. To deal with such phenomena, social scientists often use reductionism approach where they reduce them to some lower-lever variables and model the relationships among them through a scheme of equations. This approach that is called equation based modeling (EBM) has some basic weaknesses in ...
متن کاملCharacterizing the competition for links on the web
As a whole, the World Wide Web displays a striking “rich get richer” behavior, with a relatively small number of sites receiving a disproportionately large share of hyperlink references and traffic. However, hidden in this skewed global distribution, we discover a qualitatively different and considerably less biased link distribution among subcategories of pages—for example, among all universit...
